rose icon  Some Definitions of What

                a Marriage Is and Isn't

A Trinity:   Most marriages have three parts:   1)  the heart-to-heart union, the love, the commitment, the caring, the sharing.  This is the real marriage.  The second part is the wedding, the public declaration and celebration of your love and commitment, and the third part is the legal aspect for which you obtain a marriage license from the state.  The three parts are usually combined; however, the  parts can be completely separate.   You can any one of them without the other two.   You can have any two of them without the third part.

.

rose icon  What Is a Wedding Celebration?

A Declaration of  Love and Commitment:   This is where you, as a bride or groom, publicly state the promises which you have already privately pledged to your partner.   It's the point where you declare you marriage to your community of family and friends and ask for their support.  It's also where you make your commitment known to the world at large.  In essence, it is the point where you create your marriage by public declaration.

This Is the Heart's Day:  When you wake up on your wedding morning, the world will have changed; at least, your perception of the world will have changed.   The head will have taken a back seat, and the heart will be in charge.   If you can relax, allow and just be, you'll float through the day in a blissful high.

It's as if each partner has become two people.   There's the person floating/walking through the experience and there is the observer simply watching what's happening.   If you can stay out of your head, it's a delightful state to be in.

Three Jobs on Your Wedding Day:  We tell our brides and grooms, "You have three jobs on your wedding day-- 1) show up,  2)  be with each other,  3)  have a joyous celebration of their love."   Actually, there is a fourth job, which is much harder that the first three, and that is to do jobs, one, two, and three, only.

Wedding Day Video:   Those who have a videographer's records of their wedding day tell us that, upon first watching the video,  they are amazed at how many things they did that they didn't remember doing.

We encourage couples to, at minimum, have a friend or family member record their ceremony.   We say, "Set the camera on a tripod and let it run, uninterrupted, for the entire ceremony."   If you later have children, they usually delight in seeing what mom and dad were like before they were born.

rose icon  Why a Public Celebration Is Important

A public celebration is important because it's the point where you join the billions of others who, over the centuries, have done likewise.   In spiritual terms, you are stepping into the global, energetic thought-form called marriage.

In psychological terms you are co-creating a context called: "The marriage of ______ and ______ ."  Your new creation forms a structure (a context) within which your future activities become the content.   For a more detailed discussion of the significance of your creation, please see the page titled:   What Is a Wedding Ceremony ?  ---   And Why Is It Important?   Please also see the page describing the free wedding gift we offer to all of our brides and grooms:   Two, Free,  Life-coaching  Sessions.

rose icon  Why Plan Your Marriage?

You've probably heard the age old wisdom:

Failing to plan is planning to fail.

How many hours, days, or weeks have you spent planning your wedding celebration?   How much energy and effort have you spent planning your wedding day?   How much money are you spending on a one-day party?   Now ask yourself the same question about your marriage.

For most couples the answer to the last question is little or none.   We hear statements like:  "Getting married is just natural.  Mother Nature dictates what happens.   There's nothing we need to do."

Sure!  Right!  Just like dinner is natural to eat.  Both obviously take conscious preparation  or what you end up with is anybody's guess and probably not what you imagined it would be.

Recent research indicate that the more fantasy couples  have in their marriage the happier they are.    On the other side of the same coin, the more people live in a fantasy world, the greater their chances are of crashing.   So how does one have a maximum of both in the same marriage?

By having a balance between the two.    "OK,"  you ask,  "How do I do that?"  One answer is: "By  keeping romance and the mystery alive and, at the same time, knowing as much as possible about how your partner functions."   Here are some factors to consider.

.

rose icon  Some Factors to Consider

Although we are all made up with the same basic needs, requirements, and desires, we each have our own unique combination of behavior patterns through which we seek to satisfy our desires and requirements.   When you understand how your mate approaches life, you have a much better chance of accomplishing job number one in any relationship -- that job is creating and maintaining a loving harmony between you.

Go to any relationship book and you'll read a list of do's and don'ts.   They are usually good steps to follow, but there is another aspect that most books overlook, and that is what I refer to as "style."   How do you and your mate function in the areas listed below?   If you are not the same, then you'd best know how to allow for and compensate for each others differences.

.

Major Areas of Potential Conflict:

u  In terms of your religious, philosophic, and political beliefs, do you hold similar beliefs?

u  We all perceive the world via our senses with one sense being dominant.   Are you primarily auditory, visual of kinesthetic?   How about your partner?

u  Do you measure success by whether or not others will approve or is you motivation internally measured.
Inner directed:
This feels/sounds/ looks good to me.    Externally directed:    What will "they" think/ say/ do in
                                              response to my behavior?

u  Some of us first see sameness and then note the differences while others first see differences and then acknowledge similarities.

u  Are you financially compatible?

u  Have you talked about your sexual needs and desires?   Did you plan your first sexual encounter or did it just happen?

u  Are you intellectual or intuitive?   Do you think and plan every detail or do you act based upon what feels like the right way to go.

u  Although women are becoming more and more equal is our present American social structure, the age old tradition that  men to have the power of command and women have veto power is still very much alive.    How do you and your partner relate in terms of power and control aspect of your relationship.   If your not compatible with your partner in this area,  major conflict is waiting in the wings.

Are you planning your marriage or are you just letting it happen?   In the areas where you find differences, how well do you function together?  Have you decided how you will deal with your differences in style?   Remember,  "If you fail to plan your planning to fail."

These differences/distinctions (plus numerous others)  are explained on Rev. Cote's personal success coaching web site.    Call him for more on this topic.
